Moir Landscape Architecture were engaged by Port Stephens Council to design an interpretive landscape walk and entry signage for the Koala Sanctuary in Anna Bay. The facility is an innovative concept combining conservation with tourism and provides visitors with the opportunities of having an up-close experience with Koalas.

Located in the vegetated bushland of Tomaree National Park, the facility features an information centre, ‘glamping’ accommodation, a koala hospital, a sanctuary story walk and a boardwalk through the koala enclosure tree canopies.

The project seeks to educate visitors about the hazards koalas face in the wild and provide suitable habitats for their future. The sanctuary story walk is a journey along a winding trail, with narratives told along the way through interpretive signage and large playful koala sculptures.

Navigating through the site are a series of wayfinding elements that form part of the identity of the facility and guide users. Overall the signage incorporates timber and perforated steel, a classic and contemporary look with a natural colour palette amongst the eucalyptus trees.
