In response to increased new medium density apartment developments in the area and a new Child Care facility, Newcastle City Council recognised the importance of improving pedestrian access and circulation, address car parking pressures and enhance the visual amenity of the street.
The project identified a range of public domain and infrastructure improvements which will help to improve the amenity, liveability, vibrancy, environmental sustainability, and viability of the core commercial precincts. The purpose of the plan was to assist Council prioritise renewal works to mitigate risk and improve the overall function of the Local Centres.
Focusing on the core precinct between Merewether and Windsor Streets the project also considered other opportunities in the surrounding streets, parks and open space connections.
