Aberglasslyn, located nearby Maitland, is a new residential area that has become a key growth area within Maitland City Council LGA, experiencing an 800% increase in population from 2011 to 2016.

To provide amenity for the new community, Moir Landscape Architecture were engaged by Stockland to undertake the design and documentation for the McKeachies Run estate, in the streetscape design, open space and riparian corridors.

Moir LA developed an overarching strategy that integrated sustainable urban design principles as building blocks to create a liveable and vibrant community. The design was underpinned by the desire to create a strong and unique landscape theme centred around the provision of community gathering spaces, active and passive recreation areas, shaded and connected pedestrian loops and additional tree planting to create habitat and shade.

The design for the play space provides new residents with opportunities for discovery, adventure and community gathering. The key elements of the design include dynamic and inclusive play equipment such as a challenging climbing structure, flying fox and swing set as well as opportunities for nature play and imaginative play spaces that encourage children to engage with nature and be physically active. The play space also includes additional paths that connect into the overarching pedestrian network, additional shaded seating and picnicking areas that encourage social gatherings and create a sense of community within the new estate.
