THE SANCTUARY

Moir Landscape Architecture were engaged by Urban Growth NSW Development Corporation to provide landscape design from concept through construction administration for Stages 14-17 and the adjoining Aboriginal Heritage Conservation Area (AHCA) for Sanctuary at Fletcher. Sanctuary is a large residential estate located 25km outside of Newcastle which is recognised for the high quality of urban design and landscaping.

We worked closely with the Local Aboriginal Group to develop design themes for the proposed AHCA park and incorporate these ideas in a sensitive manner whilst achieving a functional community space. The final design resulted in a unique terraced park which provides expansive elevated views over the surrounding wetland environment from level lawn seating areas retained by natural stone.

We collaborated with Artscape and the Awabakal LALC in the development of interpretive artwork and sculptural elements in the reserve including an animal kinship garden which provides an interpretation of the traditional land owners connections and the Eagle which is the totem of the Awabakal.
